Jon P. DeVries, M.D.


   Jon DeVries, MD is a board certified fellow of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has additional subspecialty training and board certification in hand surgery. He moved to Charleston and joined South Carolina Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in 2001.

Dr. DeVries attended college in Salt Lake City at the university of Utah, majoring in biology. He went to medical school at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and then moved to Philadelphia for his orthopaedic training. He spent six years of intensive training at Hahnemann University, gaining valuable experience working at several inner city trauma centers.

He opted to further specialize in hand surgery, which requires excellent surgical skills and meticulous attention to detail. He did his fellowship training at Duke University, working directly under those who write classic hand textbooks. Dr. DeVries maintains his contacts there and at any time can gain the additional expertise of those in the cutting edge of research, combining that with his many years of experience in this field.

He has medicine and surgery in his blood. His father is renowned heart surgeon William DeVries who is best known for his ground breaking surgery on Barney Clark, on whom he performed the first FDA approved artificial heart transplant. Jon is the oldest of seven children. His mother is a teacher who is still working as a private tutor, a testament to the work ethic she instilled in her son.

Dr. DeVries is a very well rounded person with many other talents. Jon is an excellent swimmer and in high school he broke several Utah state records. He is also a terrific skier and has never seen a double diamond he couldn't tackle. He loves to scuba dive. He is also an avid fisherman, and can be found in the early mornings on the flats when wife and his work allows. He loves sports and enjoys going to Stingray hockey games and Riverdogs baseball games and is pleased to be one of the physician specialists for these teams.

Dr. DeVries is well known for his patience, kindness and dedication to his work. He has even been a recipient of Trident Hospital's award for best bedside manner.

Dr. DeVries lives in Charleston with his wife, two small children, dog and lots of extended family. He loves working at SCSM. He knows that his partners are the best in the area. They always put the best interest of their patients above all else and that means all the world to him.
